HAZARDOUS HOUSEHOLD WASTE – Turn in at Hazardous Waste Storage Facility Bldg. 11144, Now open Monday-Friday 0800-1600 or call 315-772-6111.
USED MOTOR OIL PRODUCTS OR ANTIFREEZE: automotive, RV, etc. – No automotive work is allowed in residential areas. Contact Firestone Complete Auto Care Bldg. 11110 315-773-8025 or any automotive service retail provider. All automotive centers are required by New York State law to accept used oil free of charge. Used oil and antifreeze can also be turned in at the Hazardous Waste Storage Facility Bldg. 11144 Monday-Friday 0800-1600 or call 315-772-6111.
PHARMACEUTICALS – Take all pharmaceuticals (prescription and nonprescription) to Guthrie Pharmacy, Bldg. P-11050 off Mt. Belvedere, for free turn-in. Monday through Thursday 0800-1700 and Friday 0800-1200. 315-772-3696. For medical sharps (needles, diabetes lancets, etc.) you may get a sharps container from the Guthrie Pharmacy. Sharps containers can be turned into the Guthrie Pharmacy when full and exchanged for a new one.
BATTERIES – Rechargeable batteries (nickel-cadmium, lithium ion, nickel metal hydride and other dry cell rechargeable batteries) are now accepted in all community centers.
AUTOMOTIVE BATTERIES/LEAD ACID BATTERIES – Recycle automotive batteries at an auto care store, Firestone Complete Auto Care Bldg. 11110 315-773-8025 or exchange your car battery at the retailer when you purchase a new one.
ELECTRONIC WASTE – Personal e-waste can be turned in at the Solid Waste Transfer Station Bldg. 11001. Hours of Operation 0700-1430 Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday & Friday. Most toner and ink cartridges from printer, copiers and fax machines can be turned in for recycling at select local retailers like Staples and Best Buy or check for internet buy back companies.
TIRES – All tire retailers are required by New York State law to accept used tires for proper disposal & recycling (for example Firestone Auto Craft Center, Fort Drum). A fee may be charged for this service.
BULK WASTE – Your community center can help set up a bulk trash pickup for you through Waste Management. Please see https://www.fortdrummch.com/Current- Residents/Resident-Resources/Trash-Recycling for more details. Another option is the Jefferson County Transfer & Recycle Station, located on Route 12, which allows for the disposal of bulky items. Full details are available by calling 315-785-9072. DO NOT TURN IN AT THE FORT DRUM TRANSFER STATION. BULK WASTE WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED.
SCRAP METAL – Large metal objects and white goods please take to scrap dealers or to the Jefferson County Transfer & Recycle Station, located on Route 12, 315-785-9072.
PLASTIC GROCERY BAGS – Recycle bins for plastic bags can be found at any local retail stores and at Fort Drum AAFES location.
5-CENT RETURNABLE BOTTLES & CANS – DO NOT PLACE IN TRASH. Redeem your cans & bottles in machines at local retail stores or at redemption centers. At a minimum please place in appropriate recycling containers (i.e. metal, plastic, glass) on your regularly scheduled trash day, curbside by 0700.
Textiles. The DPW has established a comprehensive textile recycling program for use by all Fort Drum personnel. All Fort Drum personnel are strongly encouraged to participate in the textile recycling program. Textiles must be clean and dry, examples are: all footwear (singles also), all clothing (holes, missing buttons, broken zippers also fine), all linens (including sheets, comforters, towels etc.), accessories (duffle bags, purses, belts, gloves, ties, scarves, robes, stuffed animals, etc.).
